St. Thomas Aquinas and the Avengers
The Defenders of the Eucharist (c.1625) Peter Paul Rubens
January 28th is the feast day of St. Thomas Aquinas. St. Thomas Aquinas is a key figure in philosophy and theology, famous for his work "Summa Theologica." He sought to reconcile faith and reason, using logical principles to explain religious beliefs, and had a major impact on Catholic doctrine and Western thought.
"The Defenders of the Eucharist"(c.1625) is a preparatory painting for a tapestry by Peter Paul Rubens. The painting features (from the left). St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. Gregory the Great, St. Clare of Assisi, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Norbert and St. Jerome. The painting located in the Prado in Madrid.
I love the idea of the "Super Group" of Saints assembled to defend the Eucharist. Do you know of other examples paintings with Saints that are not normally depicted together ?
