Incredulity of Saint Thomas
Incredulity of Saint Thomas (1602) Caravaggio
"Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." (John 20:27).
With the "Incredulity of Saint Thomas" (1602), Caravaggio gives us the most visceral representation of the Risen Christ's physical body that've I've ever encountered. There are no halos, Jesus isn't floating or surrounded by angels, He isn't translucent or glowing. He is with the Apostles, in flesh and blood, inviting them to touch His wounds as evidence of physical presence with them.
Caravaggio's style plus the themes of the Counter-Reformation fit extremely well with the story of doubting Thomas. Happy to expand on this if anyone wants to know more.
