Annunciation Bonus!

In honor of the Annunciation we've got a bonus post of two decidedly NOT Baroque paintings.

The Annunciation (c.1434) by Van Eyck at the National Gallery in Washington D.C. @ngadc The Angel Gabriel is the most magnificently dressed Angel I have ever laid eyes on. Van Eyck's work as an illuminator prepared him to paint the impossibly intricate designs seen in his paintings. Not only is it astonishing to look at, but it is also chock full of symbolism that we can get into if there is any interest.

The Annunciation (c.1597) by El Greco at The Prado in Madrid @museoprado This fantastic painting shows a young Mary entranced by Gabriel as he shares the news of the coming of the Holy Spirit. Unique in this painting is the burning bush between Mary and Gabriel, signifying Mary's ability to carry God within her and not be consumed by His Glory. Instagram cropped it off but above Mary and Gabriel is an entire choir of Angels.
